Classical Meets Opera in the Modern Era: Monique Angele

Canadian-born and now Melbourne based musician, Monique Angele, has quite a diverse musical background. Discovering piano at age 7, she went on to do a classical piano degree, followed by a degree in opera not long after.

Now, the immensely talented Monique Angele is combining both piano and opera singing to scintillating effect for her solo career. With two EPs down, Monique is expecting a third to be released in July this year.

Taking the unique approach of recording her songs live, Monique has recently released two tracks from the upcoming EP, “I Want a World” and “Forever Strong,” recorded at the Evelyn Hotel earlier this year.

On “I Want a World” Monique describes, in her own words, “the world’s reaction after the Trump election. Everyone had such a negative and hopeless response that it was difficult for people to see any positivity for the future of the world.”

Aiming to keep a positive outlook and not focus on the perceived negatives, Monique, “wanted to remind people that they have the power to change the world for the better. The lyrics in the song point out what I would like to see in the world which is a harmonious place to live.”

“Forever Strong” is a similarly politically charged song, supporting LGBTQ rights. The lyric, ‘Let me be free’, seems to encapsulate the battle for equal rights. It really feels as if Monique is singing on behalf of the entire LGBTQ community and she does it with gusto.

Musically, Monique’s vocals soar over her precise piano playing on both songs. The vibrato in her voice certainly signals the opera background yet these feel distinctly like modern, pop songs with a classical bent.
